I’m Gabe Castro-Root, a travel reporter at The New York Times and a member of the 2025-26 Times Fellowship class, a program for journalists early in their careers. Before joining The Times, I reported on public health and climate change at Bloomberg Law and The San Francisco Chronicle. My freelance work has appeared in outlets including National Geographic, Smithsonian Magazine, Sierra Magazine and Space.com. I’m a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists and was a 2024 White House Correspondents’ Association scholar. I graduated with a degree in journalism from American University in Washington, D.C.
